Zachariah L. Hooper Family Records

Caswell County, North Carolina

The below Zachariah L. Hooper is identical to the Zachariah Hooper who served as executor to the estate of John Hooper, 1848, Dallas County, Alabama. [page 38 of Hooper Compass Volume 1 identified the living siblings of Zachariah L. Hooper as of January 1852.]

The abstract of the Bible record was made from a transcript photocopied by Bunny Hooper Horton on 29 June 2000 at the LDS Family History Center in Caswell County, North Carolina. She plans to place a copy at the Gunn Memorial Library in Yanceyville, NC. The transcription was based on the Bible of Zachariah L. Hooper and his wife, Elizabeth [Hundley] Hooper, of Caswell County, North Carolina. The Bible once was owned by Annie Harrelson (deceased) of Yanceyville, N. C. Spelling remains as in original, but formatting and punctuation have been modified to increase clarity. Underlining is used instead of the term [sic] to indicate that the apparent discrepancy appeared in the original.

Notes:

1. The 4 appears to have been corrected (but the correction appears very old).

2. A Caswell County, North Carolina marriage bond dated 16 May 1825 shows Zachariah Hooper, Sr. and Elizabeth Raimey. That bond seems to be a second marriage for an uncle of Zachariah L. Hooper. Instead, the marriage of Z.L. Hooper is recorded in a Halifax County, Virginia bond: Zachariah Hooper to Elizabeth D. Hundley, 29 Dec 1824, bondsman Charles Hundley

3. The 1850 Caswell County census listing for this family: page 202(A), #417/419, enumerated 7 September 1850:

Zachariah Hooper 48 b. Caswell County, farmer
          Elizabeth Hooper 44 b. Virginia
Thos. J. Hooper 21 b. Caswell County, farmer
          E. H. Hooper 18 b. Virginia, student (male)
Azariah Hooper 17 b. Caswell County, farmer
          Martha A. Hooper 15 b. Caswell County
Mary Hooper 9 b. Caswell County
William Hooper 7 b. Caswell County
Elizabeth Hooper 6 b. Caswell County
Aurelia Hooper 5 b. Caswell County
George W. Hooper 5 months, b. Caswell County
          Jane Bradley 40 b. Virginia
Nancy Brackin 66 b. Caswell County

(Nancy Hooper, the widow of Benjamin Hooper and mother of Zachariah, had married Joseph Brackin in 1841.)

4. A 4 seems to be underneath the 5 of 1825.

5. The marriage bond dated 10 Dec 1851 shows Charles H. Hooper and Amanda Moore. Bunny Hooper Horton, who supplied the transcript on which this web page is based, has verified that the marriage bond shows the year as 1851. Further mention of Charles and Amanda Hooper and their offspring can be found in the Hooper Compass, Volume 3, pages 168-170.

6. The 1850 Caswell County census listing for this family: 228(B), #826/829, enumerated 5 November 1850:

Alexander Moore 46 b. Virginia, farmer
          Mary Moore 39 b. Virginia
          Amanda Moore 18 b. Virginia
          Sarah Moore 16 b. Virginia
          Alexander Moore 10 b. Caswell
          Joseph Moore 9 b. Caswell
          Mary Moore 7 b. Caswell
          Judith Moore 5 b. Caswell
          Catharine Moore 3 b. Caswell
          Margaret Moore 2 b. Caswell
John Carter 23 b. Virginia, constable

7. The marriage bond dated 16 Febr 1856 shows Martha A. Hooper and Albert G. Henderson. The 1880 Caswell County listing for them (on page 186D, at Locust Hill) shows:

Albert G. Henderson, head, age 43, farmer NC NC VA*
Martha A. wife, age 45, keeping house NC NC VA
John J. son. age 23, farm laborer, NC NC NC
Elizabeth B. daughter, age 10 NC NC NC

     * birthplace of individual, birthplace of father, birthplace of mother

8. The Caswell marriage bond dated 24 Apr 1865 shows Elizabeth L. V. Hooper and Charles Chaky De Nordendorf.

9. Aurelia Hooper probably married after 1868, since no marriage bond was found in earlier years in Caswell County. She is listed with her husband in 1880, at Dan River in Caswell County (page 286B):

John Harrelson, head, age 45, farmer NC NC NC
Aurilia wife, age 35, keeping house NC NC VA
