Montgomery County lies on the northern edge of middle Tennessee, just south of Christian and Todd Counties, Kentucky. The county came into existence when Tennessee became a state, in 1796. Fortunately, this county has nearly all of its early land records, and most of its early court records. Daughter counties Stewart and Dickson took parts of Montgomery County in 1803. Between the 1850 and 1860 enumerations, Cheatham County was drawn from parts of Montgomery, Davidson, Robertson, and Dickson Counties. Thus, families found in 1850 Montgomery might not have moved, yet still be listed in 1860 Cheatham.
Two different enumerators worked in Montgomery County in 1850. The first enumerator, assistant
marshall F Ramey, began his work on August 21. He rarely marked the columns for marriage within the
year, for school attendance, or for literacy. The second enumerator was J. Noblett. He noted atop
his pages that he was enumerating "Civil District 1, 2, 3, & 4." Of the households below, only
that of Nancy Hitt was counted by Mr. Noblett.
Many of the page headings are nearly illegible. Thus, for this county I have used both series of
handwritten and stamped page numbers. As an further aid for finding the desired page on the
microfilm, I note the date when the enumerator interrogated the family. Because of the large
number of households of interest, I have formatted the notes here differently from the style used
on other pages within this series.

| Enumerated August 26 William Hooper's occupation was "Tinner" as was that of head of household H. P. Dorris, and of younger men Benjamin Johnson, Stephen Maxey, and Thomas Howell. Probably, Dorris was the master tinner and the younger men were all (or had been) apprentices to Dorris. Value of the real estate belonging to H.P. Dorris was $3000. The surrounding households include craftsmen and businessmen. A hotel was listed just two households before this Dorris home. | ||||

Enumerated on September 5, farmer Thomas Jefferson Weakley owned real estate valued at $1000 in
1850. Mrs. Jerusha Weakley probably is the daughter of Churchwell Hooper mentioned in his 17 November 1807 Davidson County, Tennessee will. Davidson County Will Book 4, page 278 gives some idea of the age of the daughter of Church Hooper, for it shows that the Jerusha Hooper, heir of Churchwell Hooper, deceased, was still a minor in 1813.
The same source says that one of the two tombstones in Page Cemetery is of Perlina Weakley Page, first wife of Moody Page, b. 19 Apr 1832; d. 9 Oct 1879.
| page 156/332 household 464 William B. Hooper 35 TN Rebecca 30 TN John T. 13 TN |
Both this and the next household were enumerated September 19 From 1850 to 1880, the occupation listed for William B. Hooper was "blacksmith."

Thomas Bell, the father-in-law of the above William B. Hooper, was a farmer with real estate
worth $800 in 1850. Cemetery records of Cheatham County, Tennessee, pages 277-278, Appendix C. Thomas Bell Cemetery, recorded by Edna Z. Cabler, 11 May 1985. Cemetery was destroyed by bulldozer late 1960's. The only known tombstone, that for Thomas Bell was destroyed. Information is based on a prior survey. Thomas Bell, b. 10 Oct 1788, d. 13 Jan 1867. His father, Thomas Bell, Sr., b. 3 Jan 1761 Warren Co., NC, d. 1847 is thought buried in an unmarked grave. His mother (that is, Mrs. Thomas Bell, Sr.) Martha "Patty" Pegram Bell is thought buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery. His wife (that is, Mrs. Thomas Bell, Jr.) Judith (Judy) Shearon Bell, b. ca 1790 NC d. 6 Oct 1841 is thought buried near her husband in an unmarked grave. Judy Shearon Bell was daughter of Sterling and Nancy "Anne" [Williams] Shearon. Judy Shearon and Thomas Bell, Jr. were married 10 December 1809 in Warren County, NC, and had arrived in what is now Cheatham County by 1812. Children of Thomas Bell, Jr. and his wife Judy were John, Martha, Rebecca, Mary Ann, Cynthia, Jesse, and Thomas. John and Jesse died young and are thought buried in unmarked graves in this cemetery. Rebecca Bell married William B. Hooper. Martha Bell married Claiborne Smith. Mary Ann Bell b. 15 Sept 1822, d. June 1891 married Abner Hunter 5 Dec 1839. Thomas b. 6 Aug 1830 married Rosanna Harris 1852.

Enumerated on September 28, farmer Asa Hooper was a son of William and Sarah (Hollis) Hooper. See
William Hooper's 1825 Montgomery County, TN will. Asa W. Hooper was a
physician and owned real estate worth $600. Virginia Hooper was the only person on the page listed
as having attended school during the year. William Bristow's occupation is given as "Shoe &
Bootmaker." Land records show that Asa and wife Margaret Hooper conducted land transactions in Calloway County, Kentucky from 1854-1856, but they were back in Tennessee by 1860.

| *Cheatham Co. Marriages show that Robert W. Hooper married Josephine E. Brinkley on 1 June 1869.
Neither Asa W., nor his son Robert W. Hooper remained in Cheatham County, TN in 1880. The family of Asa W. Hooper will be examined in a discussion of middle Tennessee Hooper lineages appearing in Volume 3 of the Hooper Compass. See the order form for subscription information.
| page 181/361 household 683 Robert Davis NC Elirabeth 54 TN |
Enumerated on October 2, Robert Davis was a farmer with $1000 of real estate. Nearby households
included #682 William Davis 28 TN and #684 Elijah H. Davis 37 TN. Of possible significance is the
fact that the Elijah H. Davis includes children named William, Elirabeth [sic], and Asa. The given name of Mrs. Robert Davis truly is written as Elirabeth; three other women on the page also are shown as Elirabeth. However, the same enumerator wrote Elizabeth on nearby pages - as, for example, Elizabeth Holt, wife of Benjamin Holt at household 714. Elizabeth Davis likely is the Elizabeth (Hooper) Davis who was a child of William Hooper. See William Hooper's 1825 Montgomery County, TN will.

Both of these households were both enumerated on October 4 James Hooper reappears as J. B. Hooper on the 1860 census.
A researcher [entry 8310101-42 on IGI] has identified James Obadiah Ragland Hooper, b. 20 Jan 1839, Montgomery Co., TN, as a son of James B. Hooper and Eliza Hodge. Goodspeed's History of Tennessee (1886) for Montgomery County on page 1053 identified James O. R. Hooper as son of James B. and Eliza Hodge Hooper (born in 1809 TN, died 10 Jan 1881 and born 1811 NC, died 5 December 1879 respectively). The father of James B. Hooper was listed as William A. Hooper. William Holt was a farmer with real estate valued at $300. His age and his enumeration next door to James Hooper suggest he was the widower of Sally Holt. She was identified in the 1825 will of her father William Hooper. A William Holt family appears on the 1830 and 1840 Montgomery County census lists. Nearby households on the same census page might include William's children: #711 Aadison Holt, 25 TN; #714 Benjamin Holt, 25 TN; #715 James Holt, 23 TN

Enumerated December 2 and 3 No occupation were listed for anyone within this household. Nancy Hitt's real estate was valued at $2000. Notice the different surname spelling for Micajah Hite. The census gives no indication why Andrew Hooper is listed in the middle of this family. |
