Information on this page and sister webpages was expanded and/or updated on 15 January 2002. These families were analyzed in the first volume of the Hooper Compass Quarterly Newsletter. (For article titles, see the table of contents.) An update on John W. Hooper, son of Jacob, is expected in Hooper Compass 3:2 (February 2002). (Click on the order form for subscription information.)
note: On 1880 census listings, the three states listed are birthplace of the named individual, then birthplace of father, and birthplace of mother.

*The age for Ruth, upon first glance, looks like 90. However, not many people were in Missouri in 1780, so it seems unlikely Ruth was born there so long ago. The number cannot be 10, 40, 50, 60, 70, or 80. Comparison of the other 2s on the page shows vague similarity in the formation of this number; perhaps the enumerator was writing the age as nineteen when he was interrupted and told the age should be twenty, so he altered the stroke to make it a 2. Of all the possible digits, the initial number is more like other 3s on the page. On the other hand, an age of 20 is most compatible with the entries on the 1830 and 1840 census for Jacob Hooper. Caution is urged, until Ruth A. Hooper can be found on either an 1850 or 1870 census. Writing on the page is otherwise dark and clear, easily readable.
note: in the 11 May 2000 version of this page, Isaac was incorrectly identified as a child of the older Isaac Hooper. However, a deed for an 1872 land sale (recorded 1878) in Collin County, Texas proves that this Isaac W. (or M.) Hooper instead was the heir of Jacob Hooper. There were nine total shares of this inheritance from Jacob. Five of those shares are represented by (a) Isaac, (b) James, (c) John M., (d) Elizabeth (the second Mrs. James Thompson), and (e) the three children of the deceased Mary Ann Hooper (who had been the first Mrs. James Thompson). Deeds showing the disposal of the other four shares have yet to be located.

Mary Ann Hooper married James M. Thompson 23 Aug 1849 in Platte Co., MO. There may have been a
long relationship between the Hoopers and Thompsons. When Richard M. Jacks died intestate in Platte
County, James M. Thompson was appointed administrator. Thompson's security bond was given by Jacob
Hooper and Colby Powell on 15 March 1848. (Jacob Hooper -as Jacob Hooker - was listed next
to this Richard Jack on the 1840 census in Platte.)
A Power of Attorney given 1872 and recorded in Collin County, Texas shows that three children
of James M. Thompson and Mary Ann Hooper survived their mother and were heirs of their grandfather
Jacob Hooper. They are listed under their father and step-mother/aunt Elizabeth Jane, for their earlier
census listings. Below are their enumerations, or those of their offspring, after marriage:
Sarah was born 24 October 1851 in Missouri and died 12 April 1880. She is buried in Plum Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Co., KS. Her husband John Thomas Carter and children are listed on the 1880 federal and 1885 state census:

Georgia Thompson was born about 1852-4 in Missouri. She was married to Andrew M. Williamson, age 28, on June 27, 1872 by Methodist Episcopal Church minister M. R. Clough in Jefferson County, Kansas.

*The age and mother's birthplace suggest that this E. Hooper is the daughter of James A.
and Mary Hooper. Apparently, the woman is duplicated as Elton Hooper within the Kansas home of her
parents in 1880 (but appeared in earlier years, as Susan or Susan E. Hooper).

When their aunt Mrs. Sarah (Irving) Hooper applied for federal benefits based on her husband's Mexican War service, both James and John Hooper served as witnesses attesting to the fact that she was the unremarried widow of Abraham Hooper. They had lived close to her and their cousins in Tennessee, in Platte County, Missouri and in Atchison County, Kansas.

See above listings under older brother James Hooper for John Hooper's 1860, 1865, and
1870 listings.
John's first wife probably died as a result of the complications of child birth,
for her grave at Round Mound Cemetery in Atchison County, Kansas identifies her as Sarah Elizabeth
Hooper, 12 March 1872 age 32 years, wife of J. W. Hooper." A nearby grave is for "Elizabeth Hooper
Sept 1872 age 6 mo."
Powers of Attorney recorded 1872 in Collin County, Texas identify James Hooper as remaining in
Atchison County, Kansas. However, the same documents identify John W (M?) Hooper as a resident of
Grayson (or Collin) County, Texas. If he actually moved to Texas from Kansas, John soon returned and remarried, for he
reappears in Kansas again in the 1880 census. The age discrepancies on the 1880 probably resulted
because the second wife was less familiar with the ages of her new family.

1870 - Uncertain. The family probably resided in Jefferson County, KS since a Power of Attorney
recorded in Collin County, Texas in 1872 gave that location as the place of residence.

*The year of this census must have been a sad one for the family. Little Harry (born 13 Dec 1880) died on 17
March 1885. Older sister Susan Magdaline Thompson (born 10 July 1863) died on 16 September 1885.
Their brother Benjamin Anderson Thompson long outlived them - he died 4 April 1935, according to
his tombstone.
Collin County, Texas marriage records show that Margaret A. Hooper married Daniel David Dawson on 13 February 1859. The location of the marriage is the primary reason for thinking she belongs as a daughter of Jacob. Her 1860 entry shows her birth was about 1841 in Missouri, so she was not on the 1840 census. She should be with her parents in 1850, but of course Jacob's 1850 listing remains unfound. In 1860, she lived with her in-laws. She seems to have died before the 1870 census. Thus, if she really was a child of Jacob and Magdalene Hooper, her share (i.e., her surviving children's share) of the Hooper estate probably was handled by her husband. The most fruitful way to look for proof of her parentage likely would be to search for a deed in Collin County from D. D. Dawson, wherein he sold that share. The purchaser may have been F. M. Saling, who had bought 5 of the 9 shares of the Jacob Hooper estate.

Ruth A. Hooper (daughter of Jacob)
So far, no record besides the 1860 listing (with Magdalene Hooper) has been located.
Nancy A. Hooper (daughter of Jacob)
So far, the only definitive records for this woman are the 1860 listing (given at the top of this web page) and a marriage license. The Collin County, Texas marriage register shows Nancy Hooper married her neighbor Cit Whitaker on 23 Sep 1860. Neither Cit nor Nancy Whitaker have been found on later records. There is a strong probability that Nancy was widowed, returned to Missouri and/or Kansas, and then moved to California around 1875 with her second husband.
